Alex Garland‘s latest dystopian A24 film Civil War is out in theatres this weekend, attracting buzz from fans and critics alike.
It first premiered at South by Southwest on March 14, 2024 (to mostly positive reviews) and has caught the attention of cinephiles who appreciate the famed director’s style.
The post-apocalyptical film — which stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, and Cailee Spaeny, among others — follows a wartime photographer who attempts to reach Washington D.C. with her small group of journalists to interview the president before a secessionist faction reaches the capital.
Albeit exaggerated, the film plays on the current state of political affairs where the division in opinion is deadly. It centers around an armed conflict between a fascist three-term president who has eliminated the F.B.I. and a faction of secessionist states, a scenario that some have pondered given the forthcoming presidential election in the United States.
So, where can you watch Civil War? Will it be on Netflix? What about Max?
Here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie:
WHERE TO WATCH CIVIL WAR:
As of now, the only way to watch Civil War is to head out to a movie theater when it releases on Friday, April 12. You can find a local showing on Fandango. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait until it becomes available to rent or purchase on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple, YouTube, and Amazon, or available to stream. Keep reading for more information.
WHEN WILL CIVIL WAR BE ON STREAMING? WILL CIVIL WAR BE ON HULU?
Since we know that A24 is distributing Civil War, it isn’t likely to be made available to subscribers of the Disney-owned streaming platform Hulu.
While a streaming release date has not yet been announced, we can guess that if it does end up on streaming, it will be about 45 days after debuting in theaters. This will be when it becomes available to rent or buy. If Civil War follows that trajectory, you might be able to watch it from the comfort of your home by May 27, 2024.
WILL CIVIL WAR BE ON MAX?
Yes, Civil War should be coming to Max, although it hasn’t been officially announced. A24 signed a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery in December to bring its theatrical films to the streaming site in 2024. The platform — previously known as HBO Max — doesn’t do direct-to-streaming releases, however. Instead, they’ve implemented a 45-day window between the theatrical release and the Max release.
A24’s film Priscilla, however, didn’t start streaming on Max until February 2024 — almost four months after its theatrical release in October 2023. If Civil War follows a similar timeline, it might not land on Max until August 2024.
WILL CIVIL WAR BE ON NETFLIX?
No, Civil War will not be on Netflix — at least not anytime soon. While the film may come to the streamer eventually, you’ll have to head out to a movie theater or wait for it to become available on Max or VOD for now.
