Rebel Wilson recently opened up to Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on Today about her upcoming memoir Rebel Rising, in which the comedian revealed she did not have sex until she was 35 years old.
During Monday’s (April 1) broadcast, the comedian joked that she wished it “was an April Fools joke, but it’s not.”
“Nobody knew that about me and I just thought if I’m going to write a memoir, I’m just going to put everything in it,” she confessed. “So, the first person was the editor of the book, and I was like jeez, now one person knows, and slowly a few more people knew.”
Kotb then asked what about losing her virginity at 35 “embarrassed” her, to which Wilson responded that it was “the stigma associated with it” and the possible headlines that would follow.
“But then on the other hand, I’m so glad that I lost my virginity on my terms. I was more than ready by that age,” she said, before adding, “There were some good things about it, I didnât have STDs in college.”
Both Kotb and Bush Hager laughed as she continued on a more serious note, “There were some good things about it. But, I guess just to make people out there not feel alone. Thereâs a lot of people have been writing to me on social media saying they were also late bloomers.”
Bush Hager, who had also discussed this news last week with Kotb, noted that it was a useful lesson in confidence for young women.
“I think it also just teaches us that youâre the chooser, that women are choosers, they donât need to be peer pressured to do something they donât want to do,” she said.
That is not the only shocking detail from Wilson’s memoir that’s made headlines. The comedian and actress has been publicly feuding with Sacha Baron Cohen, whom she accused of harassing her on set in 2016.
While speaking to Kotb and Bush Hager, Wilson appeared to hint at the feud when Kotb asked if she still felt like a “people-pleaser.”
“Well, now Iâm a bit freaked out because obviously when you write your truth not everybody is going to feel happy about it,” she told the daytime hosts. “In a lot of ways, you just have to be like, screw it, this is what happened, Iâm writing it down. And I guess the older you get as a woman, you tend to care less.”
Rebel Rising is out April 2.
Today with Hoda and Jenna airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
