Luna Personal Massager Review: One Writer Tries Amazon’s Top-Rated Sex Toy

Most people familiar with vibrators would probably say that they’re pretty predictable. You may be able to get creative and find different ways of using them, but for the most part, a vibrator will give you basically the same experience each time. Not the Luna Personal Massager. This bestselling toy is different, and that’s for one specific reason: It offers not only eight speeds but 20 different vibration patterns. That’s 160 (!!) different possible ways of vibrating.

The Luna Personal Massager has over 25,000 ratings on Amazon averaging 4.5 stars, with reviewers glowingly praising the device: “I genuinely don’t know how many times the church bells tolled, but I think I might’ve blacked out at one point” one person said. “I will never need a boyfriend ever again,” another reviewer wrote.

The waterproof, medical-grade silicone, USB-chargeable clitoral toy comes in small and large sizes, as well as a dazzling array of colors: The small one comes in light blue, light pink, mint green, purple, teal, and white, and the large comes in pink, purple, hot pink, and black. It’s one of the best cheap sex toys on the market, ranging from $21-$28 depending on the color and size you pick.

In terms of shape, this is a classic wand vibrator. There’s a rounded head attached to a flexible neck and a handle with three buttons: One to turn it on and off, one to control the intensity, and another to cycle between patterns. Using the buttons is a little complicated because since there are so many settings, making it harder to find the one you want immediately. The good thing is that the toy has an intuitive memory, causing it to start on the same pattern you left off on last time.

But back to those 160 patterns. If you’re anything like I was a week ago, you may be thinking, so what? Honestly, I have never really found all those patterns some of the best vibrators tout to be anything more than a nuisance—or a cruel form of teasing—since they all too often cause the intensity to decrease just when you want it to increase. After using this toy, though, I am starting to appreciate the value of varied vibration settings. And this vibrator’s basic, steady setting by itself is also solid, thanks to its big, bendy, squishy head and strong power.

The many patterns also have their pluses: You can switch up a session with the simple push of a button, and if you’re like me and wish you could tell a vibrator “don’t stop” like you could tell this to a human, this type of toy can teach you a lot about the art of slowing down and teasing yourself. While my usual instinct is to put a vibrator on the highest setting and allow the steady buzz to take me to orgasm as quickly as possible, there is also fun to be had in the gradual buildup that a more complex pattern can provide.

The settings all generally involve alternations between vibration and stopping at different speeds. Some vibrate and stop and vibrate and stop quickly, some do so slowly, and some alternate between quick and slow cycles. Even though I really wanted to just use the one setting that did not stop at all on the small Luna Personal Massager I received, I settled on one that stopped and started very quickly. It emitted a sound similar to what I might imagine coming from a spaceship full of aliens, and it did indeed take me to another world. It may have been the first orgasm I ever experienced from a start-and-stop-style vibration setting.

I find it easiest to have multiple orgasms if I start off with a more subtle form of stimulation and then escalate to a more intense form after the first orgasm. So, after I tried out this setting, I moved to the tried-and-true continuous vibration setting and had three more orgasms. Not. Bad.

Since that solo session had set the standard for future ones (not to mention future partners, may they be able to live up to this toy), I was determined to have at least four orgasms each time I used the vibrator thereafter—and low and behold, two more times, I experienced four orgasms per session. Because the head of the Luna Personal Massager is large and the motor is strong, it’s able to deliver vibrations not just to the clitoris but also to the whole area around it, including the labia and the skin above the internal clitoris, which I think is what did the trick for me.

If you want to feel as if you’ve gotten two (or three or four or 20) vibrators for the price of one, this vibe provides a big bang for your buck—no pun intended—as each session can and will feel different with all the settings available. Of course, if you’re like me and don’t always love to switch it up, you can also keep it on your favorite setting the whole time. But, if you want to take a chance and play with it in ways beyond what you’re used to, you just might surprise yourself—in the best way.
