It seems unlikely that when New York-based software developer Josh Wardle first released word-based puzzle Wordle to the public in October 2021, he realized he was launching a global sensation.

The game saw a rapid explosion in popularity and was purchased by the New York Times in January for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, though it remains free to play.

To complete a Wordle challenge the player must guess a five-letter word in six attempts or less, with a new puzzle being released daily.

After each guess the letters light up, indicating how close you were. If a letter goes green, it is both in the word and in the correct position.

Yellow means it’s in the word, but you’ve put it in the wrong place, whilst gray means it doesn’t feature at all.

Speaking to Newsweek in January, Wardle admitted he often struggles with the game, despite having invented it.

He commented: “Well, I did create Wordle and I’m not very good at it, so there’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best.

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”

The popularity of Wordle has helped inspire a number of other online puzzles, including Worldle, Quordle and the math-based Nerdle.

The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution. To help you solve it, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.

‘Wordle’ #467 Tips and Clues for Thursday, September 29

Wordle players can use these five hints to solve puzzle #467:

Hint #1: There is only one vowel, as the third letter.

Hint #2: No letter appears more than once.

Hint #3: You want to avoid this when making your morning coffee.

Hint #4: Synonyms for today’s answer include “heat,” “scorch” and “criticize.”

Hint #5: Merriam-Webster defines today’s word as “to burn with or as if with hot liquid or steam.”

‘Wordle’ #467 Answer for Thursday, September 29

The answer to today’s Wordle is “Scald.”

Well, that was a tricky one! With only one vowel, and no repeated letters, it is likely to have challenged even experienced players. Did you get it? Congratulations if so! If not, they say practice makes perfect, so we hope to see you again tomorrow.

The next Wordle puzzle will be available at 7 p.m. ET, when the daily update occurs.
