A Domino’s Pizza delivery driver was shot and killed in an ambush robbery outside a vacant house in Detroit, Michigan, according to officials.

Driver Patrick Higgins, 62, arrived outside the property at 16557 Lenore Street, near Six Mile and Telegraph, where he was killed Tuesday night.

According to Fox 2, there have been two previous delivery-driver ambush robberies at the vacant home.

The Gun Violence Archive, a database that collects information about shootings from across the U.S., said 23 people in Detroit have been fatally shot since August 1.

CBS News reported that the murder rate in the city is 41.45 per 100,000 residents, with 275 people slain in Detroit in 2019.

Neighbor Lewis Ellis told Fox 2 that he found Higgins on the driveway and at first believed he had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Ellis said: “The delivery guy was laying on the ground and the truck was in the middle of the driveway. My first thought was maybe he had a heart attack or something.”

The neighbor then called the police and started to perform CPR in the hope of saving Higgins’ life.

Ellis said: “I was doing CPR and I was doing compressions for about three to five minutes until the paramedics got here.”

Other delivery drivers had been called to the vacant home and then ambushed, according to Fox 2.

Another neighbor of Higgins, Jim Gibbs, said: “We found out about the other two right here, next door in the driveway. It was surreal.”

Gibbs told Fox 2 of the property’s former good condition: “As I was growing up, it was a beautiful house. [The previous owner] extended the garage, he had race cars, and it was a good family house. It’s just not anymore,”

NBC affiliate WDIV-TV said police are searching for the suspected gunman who they believe is between 17 and 20 years old.

Newsweek has contacted the Detroit Police Department for comment.

There have been numerous cases across the U.S. where people have been shot dead during ambushes.

Earlier this year, a father and son were shot at a Texas self-service car wash in what police called a robbery and ambush.

The pair had been washing their pickup truck when two men in ski masks ambushed them and robbed them at gunpoint.

While the robbery played out, the son tried to flee and was shot in the leg.

Houston police officer Michael Chaney told ABC 13: “Once that happened, the second suspect, also armed with a pistol, turned and shot the father in the car-wash bay.”
