Wordle is a global phenomenon known for testing players with brain-busting puzzles.
The game gives its players six attempts to solve a random five-letter word that they need to manually input.
Wordle‘s rules follow a color-coded system that helps guide the player toward the right answer.
A green tile indicates the letter selected is correct and is in the right place, a yellow one means the letter is right but in the wrong place while a gray one indicates that the letter is not in the word at all.
Josh Wardle created Wordle as something that he and his partner could enjoy playing. He went on to release the game to the public in October 2021.
Wordle had just 90 players on November 1, 2021, but soon went on to become a globe-spanning phenomenon with millions taking part each day.
Wardle previously told Newsweek that he was intrigued to learn his puzzle game had first become popular in New Zealand.
He said: “For obvious reasons, Wordle has mostly been popular in English-speaking countries. After all, it is a language-based game.
“When it launched, it actually took hold in New Zealand first…which is something I’ve never experienced before.
“The Twittersphere over there is quite small, so everyone tends to be rather interconnected. That means if one person shares something, a lot of others are likely to see it as well, which is how Wordle gained such momentum.”
As Wordle continued to grow, the New York Times stepped in to buy it for an undisclosed seven-figure sum in January.
Despite the high price tag, the game remains free to play.
