The explosion in popularity of Wordle, an online game in which the player tries to guess a five-letter word in a maximum of six attempts, has been one of the happier developments of the past year.

Wordle was first released to the public in October 2021 by Josh Wardle, a New York based British software engineer, who wanted to make “a game that my partner would enjoy playing”.

The game gained devoted followers quickly, going from 90 players on November 1 2021 to becoming the daily fix for millions across the world.

Speaking to Newsweek Wardle said his puzzles first took off in New Zealand.

He explained: “For obvious reasons, Wordle has mostly been popular in English-speaking countries. After all, it is a language-based game.

“When it launched, it actually took hold in New Zealand first…which is something I’ve never experienced before.

“The Twittersphere over there is quite small, so everyone tends to be rather interconnected. That means that if one person shares something, a lot of others are likely to see it as well, which is how Wordle gained such momentum.”

In late 2021 and early 2022 the game became a social media phenomenon, with 1.2 million Wordle results posted on Twitter between January 1 and January 13 alone.

Wardle sold his game to the New York Times in January for an undisclosed seven-figure fee, though it has remained free to play.

Wordle went onto inspire a range of brainteasing games such as Worldle, Quordle, Dordle and the math-themed Nerdle.

The answer for today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article.

To help you solve it Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.
