Chevrolet plans to bring a new truck to market in the coming year. The fresh Silverado will be built for extreme off-roading, building on the foundations of the Silverado 1500 and Silverado ZR2.
The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Bison is likely to feature much of the same prowess as the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, with fresh equipment and tuning honed from the company’s Silverado ZR2 desert race truck, which has been competing in races across America.
The automaker, a division of General Motors, previewed the model in a video on Thursday that shows off skid plates, fresh badging, the lighting signature and grille, unique American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) wheels, and Multi-Flex tailgate.
On Chevrolet.com, the company promises that the truck delivers “high levels of performance” that allow it to “tackle any terrain like a beast”.
Chevy has teamed with AEV on the Silverado 1500-based regular duty vehicle. That company has been crafting off-road parts and accessories since 1997 for a number of vehicles inside and outside of the General Motors family.
The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Bison was also born from a collaboration between the two companies. It features provisions to install a front winch, rear recovery points, boron steel skid plates, AEV front and rear bumpers, AEV fender flares, AEV-designed 17-inch Dark Graphite aluminum wheels, fog lamps and floor liners with AEV logos on them.
That model comes equipped with four-wheel drive, a crew cab, and short box. Checking the Bison option brings the price of the truck up $5,750 from the regularly configured price of of a Colorado ZR2 ($44,895).
A similar price increase over the base price of the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 could be expected with the new truck. Pricing for the 2022 Silverado ZR2 starts at $70,195.
That truck comes equipped with GM’s 6.2-liter V8 engine that is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and delivers 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
More information on the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Bison will be revealed when the vehicle is unveiled later this summer.
When it comes to market, the truck is expected to compete directly with the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX. Both those trucks are high-horsepower machines with specialty equipment that helps deliver their impressive off-road chops.
The Ram is more powerful than the F-150 Raptor. It offers up 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. The Ford delivers 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque from its 3.5-liter V6 engine.
The F-150 Raptor starts at $69,905. The 1500 TRX has a starting MSRP of $78,890.
Ford plans on revealing its next-level off-roading truck, the F-150 Raptor R, later this summer as well.
