Cheer Season 2 premiered on Netflix this morning, taking us behind-the-scenes of the world of competitive college cheer in the aftermath of Season 1’s wild success. We watched a year lost to COVID, one of Navarro’s biggest heroes fall from grace, and another scorching showdown at Daytona. So what happens next? Will Netflix’s super popular sports docuseries return for another outing or are we officially done with Coach Monica and her bulldogs? Will there be a Cheer Season 3 on Netflix?
Created by Last Chance U EP and director Greg Whiteley, Cheer follows the ups and downs of competitive college cheerleading. Season 1 focused on the celebrated Navarro College bulldogs, who cinched their 14th NCA Championship under Coach Monica Aldama’s leadership. Season 2 picks up in the immediate aftermath of the first season’s insane success. Athletes featured in Season 1 are now celebrities, filming cameos for cash and juggling endorsement deals with cheer practice. However Cheer Season 2 finds itself going deeper than just naval-gazing as multiple tragedies strike. First the COVID-19 global pandemic, then the horrific truth about beloved Navarro cheerleader Jerry Harris. The season culminates in a tense showdown at Daytona in 2021 between Navarro and their rivals, TVCC.
But what comes next? Coach Monica is still trying to chase her next championship and TVCC is right there beside them in the fight for cheer supremacy. Will Netflix greenlight a third season of Cheer? Here’s everything we know about a potential Cheer Season 3 on Netflix…
Will There Be a Cheer Season 3 on Netflix?
We don’t know yet! Netflix has always been rather mum on the production process surrounding Cheer, only confirming a second season was on its way in December 2021. However we now know that Whiteley and his team were back in Navarro shooting two years ago. That means that Cheer Season 3 could already be in production. We won’t know until Netflix reveals whether or not Cheer Season 3 is a go!
When Will Cheer Season 3 Premiere on Netflix?
There were two long years between the premieres of Cheer Season 1 and Season 2. However we can tell from watching Cheer Season 2 that the initial plan was to follow Navarro and TVCC leading up to the 2020 NCA Championships in Daytona. When the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the event, the season continued to the follow the student athletes into the next season. So the finale of Cheer Season 2 focuses instead on “Daytona” 2021.
We know from social media that Monica Aldama and Vontae Johnson are still coaching Navarro and TVCC. It would follow that a potential Cheer Season 3 would culminate with the 2022 NCA Championships in Daytona. Following that logic, Cheer Season 3 could premiere on Netflix in January 2023. That is, if Cheer Season 3 is happening and presuming Daytona isn’t canceled because of COVID this year.
