‘The White Side of a Chess Board’
President Biden’s trip abroad was the focus of late night on Monday, with hosts talking about some of the more awkward moments at the G7 meetings.
“For one there was that awkward socially distanced picture of the G7 leaders where they look like Street Fighter characters no one wants to pick,” Seth Meyers said. “They should all be doing the video game character thing where they bounce in place in their signature pose, Biden just standing there with his dukes up, and every time you hover over him he says his catch phrase: ‘Come on, man.’”
“Yesterday was the end of the G7 summit, and everyone has already muted Biden on the text chain.” — SETH MEYERS
“Biden’s message at these meetings has been simple: America is back. You know, like the McRib, America’s back for a limited time only, offer not valid in Florida.” — SETH MEYERS
“And the meeting of the world’s most powerful liberal democracies had a lot on their plate this year, like combating climate change, trying to figure out how to stop corporations from evading tax, and countering China’s growing economic and political influence around the world. They also had to make time to take a group photo where they all look like the white side of a chessboard.” — TREVOR NOAH
“President Biden attended the NATO summit today and met with the leaders of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Said Biden, ‘I think I’m taking all three of those.’” — SETH MEYERS
“Everyone wanted something from Biden. Germany asked to stand up to Russia, the U.K. told him to keep an eye on China, and France wants him to renew ‘Emily in Paris’ for a third season.” — JIMMY FALLON
The Punchiest Punchlines (Biden Meets the Queen Edition)
“Capping off a busy weekend of G7 meetings in England, President Biden met with Queen Elizabeth yesterday afternoon at Windsor Castle. The two had tea, or as Joe Biden calls it, ‘Gettin’ in the scone zone.’” — JAMES CORDEN
“Biden and the queen had met before, but it was way back in 1982. That’s when she was touring with her synth-pop band, Flock of Regals.” — STEPHEN COLBERT
“President Biden said the queen reminded him of his mother, and the queen — this was kind of cool — the queen said, ‘Oh really? Could your mother do this?’ And she then dropped into a full splits. It was incredible.” — JIMMY KIMMEL
“OK, sure. That’s nice, but, Joe, you’re only 17 years apart.” — STEPHEN COLBERT
“Something tells me Biden would not do well on Tinder, right? ‘You remind me of my mother.’” — JIMMY FALLON
“After the ceremony, they had tea. This is what ‘The Crown’ would look like if it was on CBS.” — JIMMY KIMMEL, on the official photo of Biden with the Queen
“This is what the James Bond poster is going to look like by the time they release that movie.” — JIMMY FALLON
“Yeah, they look like they’re waiting to buy wands at Harry Potter World.” — JIMMY FALLON
