TripAdvisor has apologized for a review of the Auschwitz Museum in Poland by a user who joked about bringing a baby to the gas chamber of the Nazi concentration camp and called the site “fun for the family.”
The travel website initially said the tasteless entry complied with its submission guidelines — but later backtracked, removed the review and banned the author.
The museum on Thursday tweeted that it had asked Massachusetts-based TripAdvisor to take down the offensive review, in which the writer said they went to Auschwitz to “test the chamber” and called the site “fun for the family.”
More than 1 million people, most of them Jews, were slaughtered by the Nazis at Auschwitz during World War II.
TripAdvisor said it uses “a blend of technology and people” in reviewing posts, and that in this case, “our initial screening failed to identify this review as promoting intolerance.”
It did not say whether humans or machines had been involved in the original decision, the BBC reported.
“Through our escalation process, this review was removed,” it said. “We always aim to get it right the first time and we apologize to the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum, the Jewish community at large, and all communities and individuals affected by this initial miss.”
