Shocking video shows a protester smacking a Seattle cop over the head with a baseball bat — cracking the bike helmet that saved him from serious injury, police said.
The footage showed a mob of laughing protesters surrounding the officer as he fell off his bike during violence Wednesday night that saw at least 13 arrested in the Emerald City, police said.
After protesters threw an orange traffic cone at him, the officer tried to defend himself with pepper spray — just for him to get ambushed from behind by someone wearing even more protective clothing than the cop.
A man in a full-face helmet swung the bat to the back of the stranded officer’s face, as onlookers gasp at the impact.
The officer managed to stay standing, spraying more tear gas as he dragged his bike while fleeing the violent mob.
Seattle police later showed the damaged helmet, saying he was one of “multiple officers” injured, without detailing his condition. The suspect was still being hunted, the force said.
The attacked cop had been one of a team on bikes who were “assaulted with bottles and rocks” as they tried to arrest a suspect who threw an explosive through the roll-up gate of a police precinct, the force said.
“Police deployed pepper spray and blast balls in an attempt to create space between the officers and the protestors,” the force said, as the mob “moved through the streets setting dumpsters on fire and throwing explosives at officers.”
At least 13 people were arrested on charges ranging from property destruction, resisting arrest and failure to disperse as well as assault on an officer, the force said.
Seattle was just one of the major US cities to see violence Wednesday. Two cops were shot during protests in Louisville, Kentucky, where when a grand jury decided not to indict police officers for the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor earlier in the day.
