Paris Jackson has opened up about her multiple suicide attempts following the death of her father, Michael Jackson, in 2009.
The model-actress shared details about her struggles in the latest episode of “Unfiltered: Paris Jackson and Gabriel Glenn,” a Facebook Watch docuseries that she hosts with her boyfriend, Gabriel Glenn.
Paris recalled that shortly after moving in with her grandmother, Katherine, following her dad’s death, she started self-harming.
The 22-year-old said that at the time, eating became an addiction, and she started harming herself after a cousin called her fat. Although she would cut and burn herself, Paris never thought she would die because she was always in control.
“Yes, I tried to kill myself many times,” she confessed.
After a suicide attempt in 2013, Paris was sent to a boarding school in Utah to deal with her issues. But Paris said she had “no choice” but to go to the school as Child Protection Services reportedly said they would “take” her if she didn’t.
Although she succeeded in dealing with a lot of personal issues there, Paris said she left with many other problems.
Elaborating on her battle with mental issues, Paris, who is also a budding actress, revealed that she still suffered from depression. Earlier, Paris was on antidepressants and mood stabilizers, but she does not take medication anymore as she claimed it “clouded [her] third eye and [she] couldn’t laugh as deeply.”
Jackson said self-harm was a means to distract herself from the emotional pain and helped her need for control. “Dopamine release” was part of her reason for harming herself.
“Dopamine is called dope for a reason, it feels good,” Paris said. “Things like food and sex and drugs and music and working out — there’s a lot of things that cause a dopamine release. Self-harm was one of them, tattoos was one of them and so there was that and then also it was a distraction from emotional pain and transferring to physical pain and the need for control.”
The second episode of “Unfiltered: Paris Jackson and Gabriel Glenn” also saw her boyfriend opening up about his own suicide attempt and revealing that it was a turning point in his life.
“I still get depressed but I don’t think I could do that to myself or the people I love,” Glenn said.
