Laura Dern’s rolling thunder assault on awards season continued last night, not by picking up another trophy but by popping by New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater for an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
Stunning the crowd in a lavender suit, she jawed with host Stephen Colbert about first reading the Marriage Story script and sobbing “for 15 minutes” on Noah Baumbach’s voice mail. (Those of us with thespian friends know this is not sort of thing is not out of the ordinary.) She added that the writer-director told the recent Golden Globes and New York Film Critics Circle winner that his Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver-led film was intended to show that “endings aren’t failures.”
Colbert also saluted her turn in Little Women, inspiring Dern to note that that film’s writer-director, Greta Gerwig, is Baumbach’s partner (just in case a few rubes in the Late Show audience don’t keep tabs on these matters.) “I spent my year with [them]” she said, leading Colbert to ask “have they adopted you?!?”
All of this was pleasant and cheerful, but thankfully Colbert was brave enough to ask the bet-the-house future Oscar-nominee Dern about the rumors about being cozy with The Mandalorian sensation Baby Yoda. “There can be a frenzy when people are friends,” Dern shrugged, hoping to tamp down questions, but added “he is a fifty-year-old baby; it’s not inappropriate.” She called Baby Yoda incredibly wise with a great sense of humor, and concluded that she doesn’t mind being the taller one.
Whether or not Dern plans to winter or summer in the Dagobah System remains unclear.
