Donald Trump Jr. slammed Rep. Ilhan Omar for her comments referring to the 9/11 terrorist attacks as “somebody did something” and her Democratic colleagues for not calling her out over it.
“This woman is a disgrace. Never in my life would I imagine a member of congress showing this much disdain for America & Americans,” he posted on his Twitter page Thursday.
“I also never thought I’d see Democrats & their media lackeys turn a blind eye to this and her anti-semitism. The dems have lost their way! #Enough,” the president’s son added in the posting, which included a link to the Post’s front page and the headline “Here’s Your Something.”
Omar, a freshman lawmaker from Minnesota, touched off a firestorm of controversy when comments surfaced this week from a speech she made at the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something, and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” Omar, one of two Muslim women in Congress, told the group last month.
Democratic Rep. Max Rose of Staten Island wouldn’t comment directly on Omar’s speech, but said “we absolutely need to ensure that we uphold our civil liberties.”
Other Democratic members of the New York congressional delegation remained silent.
GOP Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL who lost an eye fighting in Afghanistan, called her comments “unbelievable.”
“First Member of Congress to ever describe terrorists who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11 as ‘some people who did something,’” he wrote on Twitter.
Fox News host Brian Kilmeade questioned whether “she’s an American first.”
Omar, who is Somali-American, defended herself during an appearance Wednesday on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”
“I took an oath to uphold the Constitution,” she told Colbert. “I am as American as everyone else is.”
Addressing the criticism over her remarks from the right, Omar said she was a victim of a “double standard.”
“It is very much embedded in a lot of our culture these days, where you will have people come after minorities for things that they say, that they might have insinuated,” she added.
Omar’s comments about Israel have also prompted backlash.
She has suggested pro-Israel members of Congress has dual allegiances and accused Jews of buying political support, tweeting that “it’s all about the Benjamins baby.”
