“We are coming to you live from a freezing cold tent on the beach,” said John Mulaney during his monologue at the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which he co-hosted with Nick Kroll.
Famously held under a rather large tent near the Santa Monica Pier, the Spirit Awards, which are live-streamed, undertook a change this year, moving east and indoors to the Hollywood Palladium. For its 41st edition, “Saturday Night Live” alum Ego Nwodim will host for the first time.
But what hasn’t changed is its focus (the independent film and television community gathering to honor its own) and its middle-of-the-day start time (2 p.m. PST), the latter of which inspires outfits, different from the evening awards show attire.
