Less than a year after the exit of drummer Matt Cameron, Pearl Jam are on a path to re-energizing themselves. According to frontman Eddie Vedder, the band is “woodshedding” while playing music together.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Vedder revealed that he and the rest of the band have been rehearsing together. He also said they are “excited for the future.” Referencing a comment by an unnamed commentator, Vedder added, “The quote was, I think, ‘Pearl Jam is in between eras at the moment.’ And I thought that was actually pretty concise.”
“We’re in the lab, we’re woodshedding, excited,” he continues. “It’s cool to think of change. As much as we’d like to have done it the way we did it forever – and we’ll still be able to do that thing – I think we’re all just excited for the future.”
Pearl Jam has not announced a new drummer… yet
Notably, when asked who would take over Cameron’s spot as drummer, Vedder was mum. ”If I were to say anything, I think we’d wanna have a band discussion about what we’d wanna say or who would be the messenger or whatever,” he said.
Vedder’s interview comes months after Cameron, who joined Pearl Jam in 1998, revealed that he was leaving the band.
“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,” Cameron wrote in an announcement on social media. “Much love and respect to Ed, Mike, and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, one filled with friendships, artistry, challenge,s and laughter.”
“I am forever grateful to the crew, staff, and fans the world over,” Cameron added. “It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
Eddie Vedder has a new documentary streaming on Netflix
While fans wait for new music and/or tour announcements from Pearl Jam, they can check out Eddie Vedder’s new documentary, Matter of Time. Streaming on Netflix, the film takes a look at Vedder’s EB Research Partnership.
“Set against the emotional backdrop of Eddie Vedder’s 2023 benefit concerts in Seattle, Matter of Time tells the extraordinary true story of families, scientists, and changemakers uniting to cure Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a devastating rare genetic skin disorder,” a synopsis for the film states.
The synopsis adds: “Through powerful performances, scientific breakthroughs, and the courage of the EB community, this moving documentary shows how love, advocacy, and creativity can ignite a revolution in rare disease research.”
