The Republican Party’s Advantage on Immigration Shrinks, Poll Finds

The Republican Party’s advantage on immigration appears to be shrinking, according to a new poll from The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Republicans now hold a narrow, 4 percentage point edge over Democrats on which party Americans trust to handle immigration, down from a 13 percentage point advantage in October.

One-third of Americans now say they trust the G.O.P. more on immigration, down from 39 percent in October. Twenty-nine percent say they trust the Democratic Party more.

A sizable 28 percent of Americans say they trust neither party to handle immigration.

Immigration has been a signature issue for Republicans and helped Donald Trump win back the White House for a second term in November 2024. But with midterm elections upcoming, the tactics of immigration enforcement have been fiercely criticized, especially after the killings of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis last month.

Tom Homan, the White House border czar, announced on Thursday that the Trump administration would end its surge of federal agents to Minnesota. “A significant drawdown has already been underway this week,” he said, “and will continue to the next week.”

Mr. Trump’s approval rating on immigration in the poll remained relatively stable, with about four-in-ten Americans approving of how he has handled the issue.

Ruth Igielnik is a Times polling editor who conducts polls and analyzes and reports on the results.
