The attempt by Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi to quash the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, and their failure to do so, has demonstrated a vulnerability that could make them both lame ducks, according an CNN analysis by Steven Collinson.
Hours after both chambers of Congress passed a bill that will put in motion the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files within 30 days, if Trump doesn’t veto it, Collinson wrote that Trump is “reeling from a spectacular defeat, easily his worst from his own party on Capitol Hill during two turbulent presidencies,“ and that the Epstein “saga blew up in his face.”
Noting that the president and Bondi were the ones who earlier went on the record and said the files should face public scrutiny, the CNN analysts claimed that now the two are the ones facing that same kind of scrutiny.
Writing they are “more vulnerable political position,” he added, “they have unappetizing political choices at a moment when Trump’s presidency appears damaged, his popularity is falling and a crush of other intractable issues bogs down his White House.”
The one hope Bondi may have, he suggested, is that the treasure trove of Epstein information may provide her with more targets that could take the “spotlight” off Trump, but that would be a stretch since Trump is in the public’s eye constantly.
Worse for both will be the belief by Trump critics and Epstein-obsessed MAGA supporters that they will not see everything.
“Such is the intrigue around the drama, that there is no guarantee people would believe that he’d released everything. And conspiracists who’ve obsessed about the Epstein issue will never be satisfied,” he warned.
