CNN’s Scott Jennings tried to downplay the significance of the overwhelming passage of a measure calling for the release of Jeffrey Epstein’s files, but his Democratic counterpart Bakari Sellers argued the vote had exposed President Donald Trump’s kryptonite.
The House passed the procedural measure 427-1 and the Senate quickly passed it on to the president’s desk through unanimous consent after Trump finally gave up his opposition to releasing the investigative files on his deceased sex offender friend, but the conservative Jennings argued on “CNN News Central” it was simply a political matter.
“Trump, look, he thinks all of this has been ginned up to create a narrative about him that isn’t true,” Jennings said. “Democrats want people to believe he had something to do with this when he had nothing to do with it, and, at the same time, we are finding out that even after Trump excommunicated Jeffrey Epstein from his life, Democrats continued to remain close to Jeffrey Epstein.”
“But in Trump’s mind, the narrative is he is somehow involved in this, even though we have Democrats fundraising with Epstein, we have Epstein programing congressional Democrats like [Rep.] Stacey Plaskett (D-VI) and on and on and on,” Jennings added. “So I think it’s become a source of frustration for him.”
The Epstein scandal exploded back into view over the summer when the Department of Justice and FBI announced that no further information about the case would be released, despite Trump’s campaign promise to declassify and release the files, and Sellers identified a huge risk Attorney General Pam Bondi faces after the vote.
“We’ve seen the risk, we’ve seen the the GOP influencers just with the binder on Capitol Hill running out of the White House saying we have something, we have something, we have something, and then they didn’t have jack, and I think you saw the pushback from the right wing,” Sellers said, referring to a White House gathering in February where Bondi handed out binders to MAGA personalities that contained little information.
“I think you saw the pushback from the MAGA base,” Sellers added. “It appears the only thing that can separate MAGA from its leader is Jeffrey Epstein, which is kind of interesting on its face. They spent all these years just with conspiracy theories about Democrats and pizza parlors molesting children that never came to fruition, and now they refuse to actually reckon with the true issue of Jeffrey Epstein. It’s rich.”
