Kristi Noem gets another warning sign as new poll spells trouble

The Trump administration got more bad news on Wednesday in a new poll that shows what a drag on the president Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has become.

The survey, conducted by Quinnipiac University, finds that 61 percent of voters believe the government is not telling the truth about the shooting death of Minneapolis intensive care nurse Alex Pretti at the hands of federal immigration agents, and 58 percent of voters want President Donald Trump to fire Noem.

“A strong no-confidence vote for the beleaguered top cop at Homeland Security whose agency’s job performance is considered dismal enough by voters that she should be let go,” said Tim Malloy, a Quinnipiac polling analyst.

“Seventy-eight percent of voters say they have seen video of the fatal shooting of Pretti by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, while 21 percent of voters say they have not seen video of the shooting,” said the write-up of the poll. “Sixty-two percent of voters think the shooting was not justified, while 22 percent think it was justified, and 16 percent did not offer an opinion.”

ICE itself is getting terrible numbers in the poll as well; by a margin of 63-34, voters disapprove of how ICE is doing its job, and 60 percent want ICE to cease its operations in Minneapolis.

This comes at a moment when Noem has faced controversy for a number of other issues. Republican senators are starting to come out against DHS building immigration detention facilities in their states, and her contract approval policies at DHS have caused such a breakdown of operations that even Trump’s border wall is facing delays.
