Some D.C.-school systems will reopen Tuesday on a delayed schedule, the first day of classes for many students after the Jan. 25 winter storm that dumped several inches of snow and ice across the region.
Among those opening on a two-hour delay are districts in Arlington, Fairfax and Montgomery counties. D.C. Public Schools, which had been opening on a delay in recent days, plans to open on a normal schedule Tuesday, Mayor Muriel E. Bowser said.
At least one district, Prince George’s County Public Schools, will remain closed for another day.
School districts consider multiple factors, including road conditions, in deciding whether to change their bell schedules. Several have explained that streets and sidewalks remain impassible after the Jan. 25 storm and that piles of snow and ice have created safety hazards for buses.
Here are announced closings and other schedule changes for Tuesday:
- Alexandria City Public Schools: Two-hour delay; essential employees must report on time
- Anne Arundel County Public Schools: Two-hour delay
- Arlington Public Schools: Two-hour delay; 12-month staff to report on time
- Charles County Public Schools: Two-hour delay Tuesday and Wednesday
- Culpeper County Public Schools: Two-hour delay; 12-month employees to report on time
- Fairfax County Public Schools: Two-hour delay; central and school office 12-month employees to report on time
- Fauquier County Public Schools: Two-hour delay; essential personnel must report on time
- Howard County Public Schools: Two-hour delay
- Loudoun County Public Schools: Two-hour delay Tuesday through Friday; administrative offices to open on time
- Manassas City Public Schools: Two-hour delay
- Montgomery County Public Schools: Two-hour delay; offices will open on time
- Prince George’s County Public Schools: Closed; administrative offices to open on a two-hour delay; 12-month school and central office employees to report on two-hour delay
- Prince William County Public Schools: Two-hour delay
- Spotsylvania County Public Schools: Remote learning; 12-month employees to report on time
- Stafford County Public Schools: Two-hour delay
