Catherine O’Hara’s family will have a ‘private celebration of life’ following actress’ sudden death

Catherine O’Hara’s family revealed they will have a “private celebration of life” following the actress’ death at age 71 on Friday.

The actress, known for her roles in the first two “Home Alone” movies and TV’s “Schitt’s Creek,” died in Los Angeles following a brief illness.

O’Hara’s team provided an official obituary to Page Six and confirmed that a “private celebration of life” will be held by the family — including her husband of 33 years, Bo Welch, and sons Matthew and Luke — in the near future.

The comedian was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital early in the morning on Friday in “serious” condition and subsequently died, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson told us.

O’Hara’s cause of death has not been revealed, though she had a rare medical condition called dextrocardia.

The “SCTV” alum was last publicly seen in September 2025 at Apple TV+’s Primetime Emmy Party in Los Angeles, where she celebrated her show with Seth Rogen, “The Studio.”

Rogen paid tribute to O’Hara via Instagram Friday, following her passing. He wrote, “Really don’t know what to say… I told O’Hara when I first met her I thought she was the funniest person I’d ever had the pleasure of watching on screen.”

“‘Home Alone’ was the movie that made me want to make movies. Getting to work with her was a true honor. She was hysterical, kind, intuitive, generous… she made me want to make our show good enough to be worthy of her presence in it.”

This is just devastating. We’re all lucky we got to live in a world with her in it,” he continued.

“I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you,” he continued. “But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

O’Hara’s “Beetlejuice” and “Schitt’s Creek” co-stars also reacted to her death in the hours after her passing.
