Person in critical condition after Arizona shooting involving Border Patrol

A person was shot in an incident involving U.S. Border Patrol in Arizona near the U.S.-Mexico border Tuesday morning, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

The person was in critical condition when medical crews arrived to the scene about 7:37 a.m. in Arivaca, an unincorporated community in Pima County, according to a news release from the Santa Rita Fire District. The person, who has not been identified, was transferred by helicopter to a regional trauma center.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department statement, attributed to Sheriff Chris Nanos, confirmed the Border Patrol’s involvement in the shooting. Nanos said his office was working “in coordination with the FBI Phoenix-Tucson office and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.”

The circumstances leading to the shooting were not immediately clear Tuesday afternoon.

CBP did not immediately respond to a request for comment by The Washington Post.
