Most of the Minneapolis area appears normal. There are no signs of unrest. But an aggressive immigration crackdown by heavily armed federal agents has led to clashes with a population that largely rejects their presence.
Two centuries ago, Nicollet Avenue was a military route, connecting St. Anthony Falls to Fort Snelling. Over the weekend, it became the stage for a violent confrontation between protesters and he government’s military-like law enforcement operation in the wake of the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident.
A vigil for Mr. Pretti was held on Saturday night about a block from where this photograph was taken. Nicollet Avenue is quiet now, but the city remains in a defensive crouch, unsure where the next battle will erupt.
