GOP candidate exits Minnesota race, slams Trump immigration crackdown as ‘disaster’

A leading Republican candidate for Minnesota governor abruptly dropped out of the race Monday, blasting President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement as an “unmitigated disaster” and a political liability for his party. Minneapolis attorney Chris Madel — who had even offered legal help to an ICE agent involved in a controversial killing — said in a video announcement that he could not continue his campaign while national Republicans pursue what he called “retribution” against Minnesota citizens amid the federal immigration surge linked to the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Madel warned that the GOP’s hardline stance is making statewide victories nearly impossible and alienating voters of all backgrounds.
