D.C.-area school and federal government closings and predictions for Tuesday

Some D.C. area school systems will remain closed Tuesday after this weekend’s exceptional winter storm and the frigid weather in its wake.

Freezing temperatures on Monday and record-challenging cold at night — with lows dipping into the single digits — mean that little of Sunday’s 6 to 9 inches of snow and sleet will melt. Instead, it will further consolidate, becoming even more difficult to remove where it has yet to be cleared.

It’s possible that some school systems will remain closed for much of the week given the persistence of historically low temperatures and the difficulty of accessing more remote neighborhood roads.

School officials weigh a number of factors, including road conditions, to decide whether to cancel or delay classes.

Announced closings for Tuesday

  • Calvert County Public Schools: Closed, emergency personnel to report as directed
  • Charles County Public Schools: Closed, code red for 12-month staff
  • Culpeper County Public Schools: Closed; maintenance personnel should report by noon Tuesday
  • Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed
  • Fauquier County Public Schools: Closed; code red for employees
  • Frederick County (Md.) Public Schools: Schools are closed; offices to open on a two-hour delay.
  • Howard County Public Schools: Closed
  • Loudoun County Public Schools: Closed
  • Manassas City Public Schools: Closed; code blue for employees
  • Montgomery County Public Schools: Closed; code red for employees
  • Prince George’s County Public Schools: Closed through Thursday; emergency personnel to report. District to open meal distribution sites on Wednesday.
  • Prince William County Public Schools: Closed; code red for employees
  • Spotsylvania County Public Schools: Closed; essential personnel to perform emergency services as needed
  • Stafford County Public Schools: Closed

(Earlier predictions)

Schools around the D.C. region closed Monday, as did the federal government. Chances are most of the area will remain shut down Tuesday.

Schools around the region closed Monday, as did the federal government. Chances are most of the area will remain shut down Tuesday.

At least two districts — those in Montgomery and Culpeper counties — have already announced they’ll remained closed Tuesday. We project that every other major school system will probably follow suit.

FedCast

We believe it’s probable the Office of Personnel Management will close federal offices again Tuesday and will, at the very least, offer the unscheduled leave or telework option.
