D.C.-area school and federal government closing predictions for Tuesday

The D.C. area is snowed in after Sunday’s exceptional winter storm and the frigid weather in its wake. Schools around the region closed Monday, as did the federal government. Chances are most of the area will remain shut down Tuesday.

Freezing temperatures on Monday and record-challenging cold at night — with lows dipping into the single digits — mean that little of Sunday’s 6 to 9 inches of snow and sleet will melt. Instead, it will further consolidate, becoming even more difficult to remove where it has yet to be cleared.

It’s possible that some school systems will remain closed for much of the week given the persistence of historically low temperatures and the difficulty of accessing more remote neighborhood roads.

School officials weigh a number of factors, including road conditions, to decide whether to cancel or delay classes

SchoolCast

At least two districts — those in Montgomery and Culpeper counties — have already announced they’ll remained closed Tuesday. We project that every other major school system will probably follow suit.

We believe it’s probable the Office of Personnel Management will close federal offices again Tuesday and will, at the very least, offer the unscheduled leave or telework option.
