D.C. area schools, federal offices, close Monday after winter storm

Schools across the D.C. region will be closed Monday after snow, sleet and bitterly cold air moved into the region, causing slick roads and sidewalks.

The Office of Personnel Management has already decided to close federal offices Monday.

The Capital Weather Gang predicted the winter storm would lead to widespread school closures, which it said may extend deeper into the week. At least two districts — those in Montgomery and Culpeper counties — have announced schools will also be closed Tuesday.

School officials weigh a number of factors, including road conditions, to decide whether to cancel or delay classes.

Announced school closings for Monday:

  • Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed
  • Anne Arundel County Public Schools: Closed, code red for employees
  • Arlington Public Schools: Closed, code 1 for employees
  • Carroll County Public Schools: Closed for students and employees
  • Charles County (Md.) Public Schools: Closed, code red for employees. Semester break will be rescheduled.
  • Culpeper County Public Schools: Closed through Tuesday; maintenance employees to report at noon Tuesday
  • Falls Church City Public Schools: Closed
  • Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed, essential personnel should follow supervisor’s direction
  • Fauquier County Public Schools: Closed, code red for employees
  • Frederick County Public Schools: Closed; emergency personnel to receive direction from facilities services
  • Howard County Public Schools: Schools and office buildings are closed; virtual workday for staff
  • Loudoun County Public Schools: Closed
  • Manassas City Public Schools: Closed, code blue for employees
  • Montgomery County Public Schools: Closed through Tuesday, code red for employees
  • Prince William County Public Schools: Closed, code red for employees
  • Spotsylvania County Public Schools: Closed, essential personnel report to perform emergency services as necessary
  • Stafford County Public Schools: Closed

School were also already closed to students for scheduled planning days and/or the end of the semester in D.C. Public Schools and and Montgomery County Public Schools.

(Earlier predictions from the Capital Weather Gang)

More than 5 inches of snow and ice is anticipated between Saturday night and Sunday night in the D.C. area at the same time that bitterly cold Arctic air is entrenched. The dangerous winter storm will lead to treacherous roads and sidewalks.

Unlike many winter storms in the Mid-Atlantic, no thaw is expected in its aftermath, meaning it will take longer than usual for the area to bounce back. The frigid nights, dipping into the single digits in many areas, will cause the snow and ice to solidify, making it more difficult to remove. It may take crews multiple days to clear roads in hard to reach neighborhoods.

The Capital Weather Gang’s predictions for school operations on Monday:

SchoolCast

A snow day is close to a lock Monday given the anticipated severity of this winter storm. We think there’s greater than a 90 percent chance all major school systems in the region shut down.
