A Trench Coat Worth Waiting For

“I’ve been wanting one for ages,” Kingsley Walters, 35, said, referring to the trench coat he was wearing when we met at Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, one of the world’s busiest intersections, on a Friday in November. “I like a coat with a waist belt.”

His was from Baracuta, a British brand, and he had styled it with jeans from the Japanese label Fullcount and Merrell shoes. “I’m attracted to the workwear silhouette,” he said. “More minimal design stuff, like, really practical.”

The designer of a namesake line of leather and canvas bags, he lives in London and was in Tokyo on a business trip. He noted that the leather bag slung over his shoulder was one he had created, called the Addington. “The inspiration came from a cycling bag bike riders would use when they’re racing and stuff, so they can easily access their protein,” he said.
