‘Deranged’ new Trump threat jolts observers: ‘Start taking his comments seriously’

President Donald Trump bemoaned the possibility of Republicans losing control of their congressional majorities and mused about canceling the midterm elections to prevent that from happening in a new interview, raising alarms for numerous observers.

The 79-year-old president spoke to Reuters, which reported that Trump expressed frustration that the Republican Party could lose their majorities in the the U.S. House of Representatives or the Senate in the November midterms, pointing to the historical trend for a president’s second year in office.

“It’s some deep psychological thing, but when you win the presidency, you don’t win the midterms,” Trump said, adding that he had already accomplished many of his goals. “When you think of it, we shouldn’t even have an election.”

Trump’s pondering alarmed many observers to freak out on social media, particularly after he threatened again to invoke the Insurrection Act to clamp own on protests in Minneapolis over his administration’s violent mass deportation scheme.

“So here’s the thing: even if he doesn’t Actually Do It, January 6th proved that They Want To Do It,” posted cartoonist K. Thor Jensen. “All of the ‘well akshually’ing in the world won’t prevent America’s dumbest soldiers from putting three in the dome of a brown person outside of a polling place and going to Quizno’s afterwards.”

“Trump says a lot of deranged s—-, but, per this Reuters article — and the threats of invoking the Insurrection Act in Minnesota this morning — he is very clearly exploring how to cancel the midterms,” warned journalist Ryan Broderick.

“The question to ask about this is, okay, he wants to cancel the midterms. How does he get the VA state board of elections to cancel the midterms?” asked New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie. “How does he get the Georgia board of elections to do it? how does he convince Republican House members to quit their jobs and give up their paychecks?”

“I don’t think he can cancel the midterms,” agreed Bluesky user Zee Roth. “I think the midterms will likely be less *free and fair* due to voter suppression, gerrymandering, military or ICE presence at polling places, and GOP-led electoral challenges to democratic candidate wins.”

“Trump wont cancel the midterms but you are a literal fool if you don’t think he won’t kill more people over the midterms,” upbraided Bluesky user cartoon dog gf.

“One thing you have to hand to Trump, he always lays it out for you,” said Bluesky user Impembo Gabecube. “So many liberals have made it almost a hobby to twist things around into being complex and obviously not what you think it is, but Trump pops that bubble every single day. He just says it.”

“LOT Of people on this site need to come to terms with the fact that there is zero guarantee we have elections,” observed writer Zack Zxiewzen. “‘Trump can’t legally…’ I don’t know how many years of watching him do whatever he wants and get away with it you need to experience before folks start taking his comments seriously.”

“No, Trump can’t legally cancel the midterms,” added journalist and author Jeff Sharlet. “Does this still seem to you like a regime that’s concerned with legality? We – everyone who doesn’t want dictatorship, for whatever reason – can simultaneously articulate often & loudly rule of law *and* think through its collapse and possible responses.”
