Trump WH slams LA City Council over suggestions it could use Olympics to stage ICE raids

LOS ANGELES — The Trump admin hit back at the LA City Council on Wednesday after pols questioned the federal government’s involvement in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games — with one council member suggesting Trump’s offer of help could result in “tragedies” like the killing of Renee Good.

Council Member Monica Rodriguez suggested that President Trump’s Olympics Task Force — announced in August — could be used as a trojan horse to step up deportation raids and confrontations with Angelenos.

“Given the ICE activities, one of my concerns is that there is going to be a federal task force tied to 2028,” said Rodriguez, a San Fernando Valley Dem. “As we know, we have increasing concerns about their involvement and influence, about what policing will look like.”

The council motion, which was approved unanimously on Tuesday night, demands that the federal government clarify its role in helping to keep the Olympics safe — and noted that the LAPD will take the lead security in the city.

But the Trump admin told The Post that these concerns are unfounded.

“President Trump’s top priority is keeping the 2028 Olympics safe to ensure this is the most successful event ever,” White House spox Davis Ingle said. “By enlisting Cabinet Secretaries, state and local leaders, and other key officials, the Olympics Task Force will use a whole-of-government approach to execute a successful 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, which requires major logistical planning and coordination across agencies.”

A spokesperson for LA28 underscored the importance of the White House Task Force in ensuring a safe and successful Olympics.

“For LA28, this Task Force represents an important planning milestone and reinforces the federal government’s commitment to working with the City and LA28 to deliver a safe and successful Games,” the spokesperson said.

Rodriguez, who has been a vocal critic of ICE raids and claimed agents use “bounty-hunter-style tactics,” told The Post her motion demands transparency from the federal task force in order to “prevent  federal overreach and maintain local control.”

“As federal immigration raids continue to threaten the safety of our neighborhoods, we must continue to prioritize local control, transparency, and community trust throughout our preparations to host the Olympics,” the Council Woman said.

Rodriguez also seemed to invoke the death of Renee Good, an anti-ICE activist and mother of three, who was shot and killed in Minneapolis after she drove her car into an ICE office.

“We’re in a very tragic moment, where we’re continuing to find ourselves in reactive mode to the activities that are being brought onto citizens in this country,” she said during Tuesday’s council meeting.

The motion comes on the heels of Los Angeles County creating “ICE-Free Zones” across County-owned and County-controlled properties.

The proposal won unanimous support from the Board of Supervisors, who blasted “dangerous” ICE agents and slammed them for being poorly trained before the 5-0 vote Tuesday.

“Our federal government is freely, without cause, murdering its own citizens in broad daylight, in front of witnesses and cameras….and is partaking in illegal actions as we bear witness and we pay the price,” said Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, who co-sponsored the measure.

There will be a follow-up vote on the matter in the next 30 days, and if approved, it will go into effect towards the end of March, a board spokesperson told the Post.

As for the Olympics, ICE has not responded to The Post’s request for comment on what role the agency will play during the Summer Games.

The last time the US hosted the games — the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics — President George W. Bush established the Joint Terrorism Task Force to work with state and local officials to provide security.

Some Angelenos don’t want to see the Olympics in their hometown at all — arguing it will do more harm than good.

Anti-Olympic organizations, like NOlympics, claim the Summer Games will lead to gentrification, militarization and the hijacking of public agendas and resources.

“The Olympics always accelerate policing, evictions, inequality, exploitation, and the erosion of democracy in every host city,” the organization said on its website. “The LA 2028 games are no different.

NOlympics was launched in 2017, and includes a coalition of more than two dozen partners in LA and across California.
