President Donald Trump’s immigration officers are becoming increasingly unpopular with voters, according to recent polls.
CNN’s Manu Raju reported on Wednesday that 62% of voters who responded to a recent CNN poll do not trust the government to carry out an impartial investigation of Renee Good’s killing. Good, 37, was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis last week while she was trying to leave the scene of an ICE raid.
The same poll asked voters if they thought ICE’s actions are making cities more or less safe. More than half of respondents said they thought ICE is making cities less safe, while just 31% said they are making cities safer.
The poll was released at a time when Trump’s immigration agencies are facing increasing scrutiny.
The administration leaped to defend Ross after he killed Good, which some legal experts have said could be an attempt to poison the well for a potential investigation. Trump and Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem both said Good was trying to attack Ross before she was shot, although videos captured at the scene and witness testimony contradict that assertion.
David Frum, a staff writer at The Atlantic, argued in a recent article that Trump may have a hard time backing away from ICE during his second administration because the agency represents “an instrument of cleansing violence” for his MAGA base.
