‘ICE-free zones’ approved in LA County after unanimous vote

Federal agents will now encounter “ICE-Free Zones” in parts of Los Angeles County under a new proposal that won unanimous support from the Board of Supervisors during a heated vote Tuesday.

Fiery board members condemned the federal government, blasted “dangerous” ICE agents and slammed them for being badly trained before the 5-0 vote.

The measure — which creates “ICE-Free Zones” across County-owned and County-controlled properties — was jointly sponsored by Board Chair Hilda Solis and fellow Supervisor Lindsey Horvath.

There will be a follow-up vote on the matter 30 days, and if approved, it will go into effect towards the end of March, a board spokesperson told the Post.

“Simply put, our federal government is killing its own citizens,” Horvath said before the controversial vote. “Let that sink in.”

“Our federal government is freely, without cause, murdering its own citizens in broad daylight, in front of witnesses and cameras….and is partaking in illegal actions as we bear witness and we pay the price,” she added.

Horvath told the meeting that mom-of-three Renée Nicole Good, 37, was “acting within her full rights as a legal observer” when she was killed during an altercation with an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Jan. 7.

She also referred to other ICE-related shootings, including Keith Porter Jr. who was killed in LA by an off-duty ICE agent on New Year’s Eve.

“2025 was the deadliest year to be in ICE custody in decades,” continued Horvath. “The deadliest since at least 2004. That reality is weighing heavily on our immigrant communities throughout our county and across this country.”

“Los Angeles County will not allow its property to be used as a staging ground for violence caused by the Trump administration. Our county public spaces should be places of care and safety, not fear. We may not control federal enforcement everywhere, but we do control our own property,” Horvath added.

“As federal civil immigration enforcement increasingly occurs in public spaces nationwide, the approved motion begins the formal legislative process to ensure County property is used solely for its intended public purposes and is not used as staging areas, processing locations, or operations bases for unauthorized civil immigration enforcement,” read a statement from the board to The Post.
