“People are always taking our picture,” said Julianne Idlet, 65, referring to herself and her Bernese Mountain dogs, Balto and Gurin. “They make people happy.”
She was walking them around London on the first Saturday in January, wearing a mustardy winter jacket that was as striking as the dogs’ fur coats. It was from the French brand Sézane, she said, and she had bought it in Paris. “One of the things I liked about it was the softness,” she added. “I used to do a lot of sewing, and so fabrics are really important to me.”
Balto and Gurin were also bundled up, in matching checkered scarves. “They live in those,” she said. “Those are their signature statements.”
She and the dogs were temporarily living in England, she said. Their home is in New York, and she is the founder of a bicycling program for elementary schoolchildren called Cycle Kids.
My camera was not the only one that her dogs posed for while abroad: Multiple people stopped to take their picture as she and I were chatting on the street. “They love it,” she said.
