Former prosecutor raises concerns about evidence in murder of Ohio dentist, wife: ‘He’s heard of DNA before’

A former prosecutor has raised concerns about the evidence against surgeon Michael McKee, who is charged with murdering his ex-wife and her dentist husband in their Ohio home last month — after it took 11 days to arrest him.

McKee was busted on Saturday, ending a frantic multi-day manhunt for the shooter who allegedly killed Monique Tepe, 39, and her husband Spencer Tepe, 37.

He was cuffed after police traced his vehicle to the Columbus house the night of the murders.

Former prosecutor Matt Murphy told News Nation that investigators are now poring through “an avalanche of evidence” — but he noted that McKee had ample time to try to cover his tracks since the Dec. 30 slayings.

“This guy was a vascular surgeon, right? So he’s heard of DNA before,” Murphy told “Banfield” on Monday.

“He’s got 11 days to clean things,” he added.

However, Murphy said mistakes could have been made.

“But also for the vast majority of murders, it is the killer’s first rodeo. And if you think about anything you’ve done for the first time, and you think about all the mistakes, especially this is what’s known as a double. Actually, it’s a domestic violence, double homicide,” he said.

A key piece of evidence, according to the ex-prosecutor, will likely be footprints outside the house and the shoes McKee wore when he allegedly broke in around 3:30 a.m. and shot the couple upstairs, leaving their two young children and dog unhurt.

“Any shoes that he’s got, I guarantee they’re already in police custody, and they’re going to be looked at by forensics. And what they’re going to look for is what’s called GSR or gunshot residue,” Murphy told the network.

McKee’s car “arrived just prior to the homicides and left shortly after,” detectives noted in the charging documents, adding that the vehicle was later found near his workplace in Rockford, Ill, some 325 miles away.

McKee and Tepe were married from 2015 until she filed for divorce in 2017, which was believed to be amicable, according to the Columbus Dispatch. The couple had no children together.

Police have not released a motive for the killing, but relatives of the Tepes said they “all expected” McKee to be arrested.

McKee is charged with two counts of murder, court documents state. He is expected to be extradited to Ohio, where he will appear in court for a hearing.

The Tepes were found shot to death after one of Spencer’s colleagues became worried when he didn’t show up for work at Athens Dental Depot, and conducted a wellness check after trying to reach him for three hours.

Another of the couple’s friends told 911 dispatchers he could hear their children, ages 1 and 4, crying inside the home when he also checked in on the family.
