3 dead, 14 injured in massive Georgia prison brawl

Three inmates were reportedly killed and more than a dozen injured in a massive brawl at a Georgia prison.

The fight broke out around 1:25 p.m. Sunday at Washington State Prison in Davisboro, and quickly plunged the 1,500-inmate facility into lockdown for over a day, 41 NBC reported.

Little is known yet about what sparked the chaos, but it is believed to have started on an outdoor walkway inside the prison grounds.

Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office had to be called in to help wrestle control of the situation, which included deploying non-lethal weapons.

The prison was finally secured around 3 p.m., but not before three inmates were killed and 13 others hospitalized for injuries. A prison guard was also hurt and taken to a hospital.

Ahmod Hatcher, who was serving 20 years for aggravated assault; Jimmy Trammel, who was doing 20 years for first-degree burglary; and Teddy Jackson, who was serving 10 years for aggravated assault, were all killed in the brawl, according to 41 NBC.

It remains unclear how they died. The guard, meanwhile, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies left the prison by 6 p.m., and it remained on lockdown into Monday afternoon.

Georgia’s prisons have been under the microscope since 66 inmates died of suspected homicides in 2024 — a staggering number which was on its way to being outpaced last year when 42 were killed in the first half of 2025, the New York Times reported.

Conditions inside the Peach State’s penitentiaries are often “horrific and inhumane,” a Department of Justice probe found in 2024.

Chronic understaffing was one of the driving forces behind the surge in violence, with gangs in some lockups taking control of entire wings and running criminal operations that extended beyond prison walls, the report found.
