An announcement by former Rep. Mary Peltola (D) that she will challenge Sen. Dan Sullivan (R) for his seat in the Senate representing Alaska led former NBC host Chris Matthews to point out that Democrats now have an increasingly better chance to flip both chambers of Congress in November.
Speaking with MS NOW host Jonathan Lemire, Matthews, a longtime political observer, suggested the Democrats are putting together an exceptional team of candidates for the midterms who could rein in Donald Trump’s excesses.
He also suggested Republican Rep. Mike Johnson’s time as House Speaker will come to an end in a devastating blowout in November.
Asked about the Democrats’ recruitment efforts to field strong candidates, Matthews told Lemire, “First of all, I think the Democrats are poised now to pick up 30 seats in the House. I do that based upon the margins that have been pulling off in these recent elections; 13-point pickup beyond what the expectations were.”
“That was true of all this, including Tennessee and Miami and everywhere else,” he added. “I also think that if you look at Roy Cooper (D-NC) and you look at Sherrod Brown (D-OH), it looks like they can win those states– they can win.”
“The time is probably come for Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) to check out,” he claimed. “I think you can only get away with being the wrong person in the wrong state for so long. I think she’s going to have to lose up there, just like Sen. Bobby Casey (D-PA) lost. Sometimes you just run out of time for your candidacy.”
“I think it’s going to make it interesting that the Senate is up for grabs, Matthews predicted. “It will make everybody covering both houses a lot more excited about the prospects. But right now, it looks like the sure thing; it looks to me is a pickup of 30 seats in the House.”
