President Donald Trump’s lawyers have asked the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to pause an order prohibiting him from sending federal troops to protect immigration agents in Portland, Oregon, according to a new report.
On Sunday, the administration filed a 494-page appeal of District Judge Karin Immergut’s order that found the Trump administration did not establish that the right conditions exist to justify deploying troops, reported Josh Gerstein, senior legal affairs reporter for Politico. Trump has described Portland as a “war zone,” although media reports indicate the protests against Trump’s deportation operations have been peaceful.
“The district court wholly failed to give the President’s determination the deference required, instead effectively reviewing de novo the law and facts,” the appeal reads in part. “The court also wrongly downplayed the dangerous conditions at the ICE facility.”
The appeal comes at a time when the Trump administration is expanding its deportation operations. The administration launched a new operation called “Charlotte’s Web” in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday. The operation resulted in multiple arrests, according to local reports.
