Judge Cannon is ‘a fine candidate’ for impeachment after Ted Cruz opened the door: analyst

A Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this week on a proposal from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to hold “rogue judges accountable” could come back to haunt Southern District of Florida Judge Aileen Cannon, according to one legal analyst.

According to MS NOW’s Jordan Rubin, Cruz argued for impeaching two judges, focusing on Judge James Boasberg, who sits on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, and Judge Deborah Boardman of U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland –– both of whom have been a thorn in Donald Trump’s side.

Asked by an MS NOW reader if Democrats could use Cruz’s game plan on the controversial Cannon should they gain control of the Senate, he suggested she would likely be at the top of the list.

Cautioning against going down that path, he did admit she would be a “fine candidate” due to her history of shielding Trump –– who appointed her to the bench –– given her record of handling of any charges levied against the president consistently in his favor.

Making his case, he wrote, “Before Trump was even charged in the classified documents case, Cannon was reversed by an appeals court over her unusual, Trump-friendly handling of litigation regarding evidence seized from Mar-a-Lago. She then proceeded to handle the criminal case in weird ways that benefited the defendant who put her on the bench.”

Noting her foot-dragging on rulings as special counsel Jack Smith investigated Trump, he added it that she is still running interference for the president.

“The judge then took so long to rule on motions seeking the release of Smith’s report on the investigation that the appeals court said she engaged in ‘undue delay’ and gave her a deadline to finally rule. She still seems intent on keeping the report secret as long as she has the power to do so,” he reported.

Cautioning once again that Democrats might not want to get into the “murky” business of exacting retribution against judges, he did point out that, if they do, “Cannon wouldn’t have a statute of limitations defense.”
