Producers Guild Nominations Strengthen Oscar Odds for Five Films

The Producers Guild of America announced the 10 films contending for its feature-film award on Friday.

Here is the list of nominees:

“Bugonia”

“F1: The Movie”

“Frankenstein”

“Hamnet”

“Marty Supreme”

“One Battle After Another”

“Sentimental Value”

“Sinners”

“Train Dreams”

“Weapons”

Few Oscar bellwethers prove as reliable as the Producers Guild. Last year, eight of the 10 PGA nominees were nominated for best picture, while the year before, the PGA and Oscar lineups matched exactly.

When there is a divergence between the Hollywood guilds and the academy, it’s typically because the guilds favor big-studio films and Oscar voters are more willing to recognize indies and international contenders. So if a movie like “Wicked: For Good” can’t even make the PGA cut, its Oscar chances should be considered severely diminished.

Similarly, though “F1” and “Weapons” are exactly the kind of studio hits the PGA likes to recognize, international films like “It Was Just an Accident” and “The Secret Agent” could still replace them in the Oscars’ best-picture lineup.

Five films have now scored top nominations across the board from the producers, directors and actors guilds: “One Battle After Another,” “Sinners,” “Hamnet,” “Frankenstein” and “Marty Supreme.” In a fluid best-picture year, at least that quintet appears locked in for Oscar nominations.

The PGA ceremony will be held Feb. 28 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Below are the other film categories. For the complete list of nominations, including television contenders, go to producersguild.org.
