2026 Directors Guild Nominations: ‘One Battle,’ ‘Sinners’ Go Head to Head

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominations for its feature-film award on Thursday, continuing the recent momentum for “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners.”

In addition to the directors of those two films — Paul Thomas Anderson and Ryan Coogler — the other three nominees were Guillermo del Toro (“Frankenstein”), Josh Safdie (“Marty Supreme”) and Chloé Zhao (“Hamnet”).

Typically, all but one of the guild’s nominees will go on to receive an Oscar nomination: Last year, the DGA Award nominee Edward Berger (“Conclave”) was replaced by “The Substance” director Coralie Fargeat in the eventual Oscar lineup.

When those splits do happen, it’s usually because the directors branch of the academy is more willing to recognize independent and international auteurs than the guild, which skews more toward studio filmmakers. So there is still hope for this year’s robust lineup of global contenders, who include Jafar Panahi (“It Was Just an Accident”) and Joachim Trier (“Sentimental Value”).

The guild also announced nominees for the first-time theatrical feature film prize: Hasan Hadi (“The President’s Cake”), Harry Lighton (“Pillion”), Charlie Polinger (“The Plague”), Alex Russell (“Lurker”) and Eva Victor (“Sorry, Baby”).

Nominees in the documentary field were previously named: Mstyslav Chernov (“2000 Meters to Andriivka”), Geeta Gandbhir (The Perfect Neighbor”), Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni (“Cutting Through Rocks”), Elizabeth Lo (“Mistress Dispeller”), and Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus (“Cover-Up”).

The winners will be announced Feb. 7.
