Word of the Day: homily

homily ˈhɑməli noun

: a sermon or speech on a moral or religious topic

The word homily has appeared in 64 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on Sept. 18 in the obituary “José María Tojeira, 78, Dies; Pursued Killers of His Fellow Priests,” by Adam Nossiter:

In the homily he delivered last November to observe the 35th anniversary of the murders, Father Tojeira spoke about the broader lessons of the tragedy, which ended up being a turning point in the path toward the negotiated settlement that ended the country’s civil war in 1992.

“We must be honest even if we are disliked, and seek truth amid corruption, the rejection of solidarity and the denial of transparency,” he said. “We must also defend human rights while the blaring horns of power claim that human rights are a mechanism to defend criminals.”
