Joined by thousands of cheering supporters crushed into a plaza outside City Hall, Zohran Mamdani delivered his first address as mayor of New York on Thursday, vowing to govern “audaciously” as the city’s youngest and most progressive leader in decades.
Mr. Mamdani, 34, whose star-studded inauguration came on a windy and raw New Year’s Day, was joined onstage by his wife, Rama Duwaji, and by leaders in the progressive movement, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of Queens; Senator Bernie Sanders, a former mayor of Burlington, Vt.; and Letitia James, the New York attorney general. The shivering crowd stretching before them included celebrities such as the actor John Turturro and the actress Susan Sarandon.
