Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey put out a lengthy message to the Somali diaspora community in his city, reassuring them in the Somali language that the city would stand with them amid the mounting attacks from President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement — and immediately, far-right activists pounced on him.
But another attack came from conservative commentator Meghan McCain, who seemed enraged by Frey’s speech in another language.
“ENOUGH OF THIS! YOU ARE A MAYOR OF AN AMERICAN CITY. ENOUGH!” she posted to X.
American Immigration Council senior fellow Aaron Reichlin-Melnick had a blunt response to McCain’s outburst.
“Fiorello LaGuardia, famously considered one of New York’s best mayors in history, spoke multiple languages and was known for using them on the campaign trail,” he wrote. “It’s absurd for anyone to attack a politician for taking the time to speak with his constituents in their language.”
The attacks on the Somali community by the Trump administration have escalated as officials have reopened a fraud investigation into public benefits funds in Minnesota that previously led to several convictions under the Biden administration. This was spurred on by a right-wing YouTuber who purported to discover fraudulent daycare facilities receiving public funds, although a CBS News fact check has cast doubt on these claims.
