Lara Trump got fully behind the idea of imposing at least one year of mandatory military service for every American during an appearance Tuesday on Fox News, comparing it favorably to Israel’s own conscription policy.
“You look at Israel, every Israeli citizen has to dedicate themselves to serving their country,” said the president’s daughter in law, who was co-hosting “Fox & Friends.”
“I like this idea because I’ll tell you what: It would give so much more appreciation to our men and women who do serve in America who I don’t think get the adequate respect from a lot of the country that they are due.”
Lara Trump’s father in law, President Donald Trump, famously received a deferment from conscription in 1968 during the Vietnam War, a deferment granted to the then 22-year-old by way of a medical exemption for supposed bone spurs.
That medical exemption was issued to Donald Trump by podiatrist Larry Braunstein, who rented office space from Trump’s father, Fred Trump. A New York Times investigation into the matter suggested that the diagnosis may have been “granted as a courtesy to the elder Mr. Trump.”
The discussion around mandatory military service was sparked by former professional basketball player Dwight Howard, who on social media endorsed the idea of conscription for every American.
Lara Trump took the idea further, and also suggested that forcing Americans to service one year in the customer service industry may also be beneficial, citing her own past experience as a bartender.
