Republican strategist Sarah Longwell laid into President Donald Trump’s senior adviser Stephen Miller in a podcast episode with The Bulwark’s Tim Miller published on Monday, following his bizarre anti-immigrant rant on Boxing Day, in which he proclaimed on X, “Watched the Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra Family Christmas with my kids. Imagine watching that and thinking America needed infinity migrants from the third world.”
This was a profoundly ludicrous remark, the two commentators agreed, because Sinatra and Martin both came from Italian immigrant families — but it also demonstrates how hyper-fixated Trump’s top adviser is on his racist obsession.
“I mostly want to focus on the person who has a sad life, who did not have any joy this Christmas, who has a black heart, who is America’s Grinch, and that’s Stephen Miller,” said Tim Miller. “He was posting through the holidays, as one does … I guess my question for you, Sarah, is imagine watching the Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin Family Christmas and thinking about migrants from the third world, migrant policy. I don’t understand why that’s on your mind. I don’t know if you had any thoughts on that one.”
“Yeah, I mean, Stephen Miller’s brain is broken,” said Longwell. “There’s a groove in his brain that says ‘immigrants’ on it, and it’s the only thing that he knows how to think or talk about. And we should take this a little bit seriously insofar as it is a window into how literally everything he consumes leads him back to a hatred for immigrants. But what was ironic about this tweet, and I tweeted about this and we were talking about it in the Bulwark Slack, because Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra are both first-generation immigrants, right? … Both Sinatra and Dean Martin were Italian immigrants who talked a lot about being discriminated against as immigrants.”
In fact, she noted, “they have, like, many quotations about what is important about being American and how only stupid people rip on them for being immigrants.”
Stephen Miller, she added, “misses the point entirely. Like, never has a person misunderstood so directly what America is about. And also, he is Jewish, which is like one of these weird things that blows my mind, because … when we look back with some shame as Americans, one of the ways is that we didn’t let enough Jews in going into World War II because of American antisemitism. We were obviously better than a lot of places. A lot of Jews that are in America now, many of their families came over to escape the Holocaust. But we could have done more. And what is he talking about? He is just the living worst and he has so much power on this.”
“Like, the animus in him runs so deep and he is a broken person,” Longwell concluded. “The extent to which broken, sad people are letting their broken sadness dictate American policy around things is deeply alarming.”
