MAGA ally Steve Bannon’s stunning admission about the fate of Elon Musk’s Department of Governmental Efficiency floored a former GOP operative on Monday.
In a piece titled “What media leaders got wrong in 2025,” Bannontook Musk’s DOGE to task over what Bannon saw as a broken promise that should’ve been identified from the start.
“Thought people in positions of power would see immediately that Elon [Musk] had zero idea what he was talking about regarding $2 trillion PER YEAR in budget cuts. Insane, yet no one stood up to him— it put us back a year and it depressed the base when it never happened…”
Bannon then complained that old-school conservatism crept into the MAGA movement.
“Linked directly to this was raising the upper bracket for people earning $1 million to 40%. Couldn’t believe how Grover Norquist’s sad-sack message from the 90s still provides cover for donor-owned members. Both dead wrong for 2025. Reality in 2026.”
Bannon’s admission about Trump 2.0 caught the eye of Tim Miller of The Bulwark.
“You hate to hand it to Steve Bannon, but there’s an interesting answer from Bannon that ties into their deteriorating popularity and how – like the damage they’ve done – and the deuterium popularity are intertwined,” said Miller.
Miller was specifically struck that Bannon pointed the finger at DOGE.
“He was basically like, ‘look, the fact that nobody saw this at the top, which was that we wasted all this time under this fake notion they’re going to save $2 trillion, which they’re never going to do, and instead we wasted all this political capital on doing that,” said Miller.
The analyst acknowledged that Bannon likely has a different definition of the damage caused by DOGE, but both admit there was “direct damage caused to people.”
“People lost jobs,” said Miller.
He added: “They did it and got nothing.”
