The police are investigating the death of a 4-year-old girl who was found unconscious in the Bronx the morning after Christmas.
The child’s cause of death was unknown on Saturday morning as investigators awaited the results of an autopsy and body scan conducted by the medical examiner.
The police have not made an arrest. Detectives questioned several of the girl’s family members after she was discovered, according to a law enforcement official who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
Officers responding to a 911 call just after 9 a.m. on Friday for someone in need of help found the girl, whose name has not been released, in a residential building near Barnes and Adee Avenues in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx, the official said.
It was not immediately clear if the girl was visibly injured, but the police said she was in critical condition when they found her. She was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where she died.
On Saturday, many circumstances of the girl’s death remained uncertain, including where exactly she was discovered and whether her parents or another guardian was present when the police arrived.
