At Least 3 Wounded in Shooting at an Idaho Sheriff’s Office

A gunman opened fire on a rural sheriff’s office in the downtown of an Idaho city on Friday, wounding at least three people before he was fatally shot by law enforcement officers, the authorities said.

The shooting, at the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office in Wallace, Idaho, prompted a widespread response from law enforcement agencies from three states, the authorities said.

One law enforcement officer and two civilians were wounded. The officer was shot in an ear, Sheriff William Eddy of Shoshone County said during a news conference on Friday evening.

The civilians, two women, were sitting in a vehicle when the gunman opened fire, Sheriff Eddy said. They were both shot in the leg. He described the injuries to all of the victims as minor.

The sheriff said the gunman, who was not publicly identified, had several firearms on him.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

Sheriff Eddy said the gunman walked into the lobby of the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office around 2:30 p.m. and opened fire. The gunman was pronounced dead around 4:15 p.m., he said.

Early reports suggested that the gunman had access to the Shoshone County Jail, which is housed in the same building as the sheriff’s office in downtown Wallace, Sheriff Bob Norris of Kootenai County said during the news conference. However, it was not immediately clear if the gunman had gained access.

The executive director of the Idaho Sheriffs’ Association, Jeff Lavey, said law enforcement officers from Idaho, Montana and Washington responded to the scene.

Wallace is a city in northern Idaho of about 1,000 people, roughly 47 miles east of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
